One of the last stocks of water buffalos in Greece lives at the estuary of the Gallikos river?

By the end of the 90’s breeding buffalow had been abandoned and these animals were facing extinction. After their inclusion in a preservation programme, as a rare species of agricultural animals, their population started to grow.

Water buffalos cannot stand exposure to sunlight, and this is why they spend a large part of their day in the water, which helps them regulate their temperature. Their milk is of exceptional quality and it is well used in confectionery, while their lean meat is considered to be particularly healthy.
